May 13, 2008, playlist for “Stumbling Upon Moksha” show on CKMS FM:

It occurred to me that since I was a child I’ve managed to somehow turn the average three and a half minute pop tune into a kind of musical Koan-- something my heart and mind could chew on and eventually surrender to.

Whether it’s through an enticing hook, soaring melody, or clever turn of phrase, music points to something unreachable by just the mind alone.

So to explore this week’s offering I challenge you to sit with the idea of forgiveness. Start with the fundamental, but still unrealized perfection that we often call innocence, and then onto each and every attempt we make to DO and BE our best. In the end, it’s all a surrender to what is.

From here, we see that freedom and happiness are not discovered by reaching a goal, but rather, by mastering a process of loving and letting go, over and over again. Only when we see that it doesn’t really matter CAN it matter.

Make it matter. Be real; choose true; and give everything you’ve got!

Joni says, with knowing amusement, that in order to be optimistic, you have to be irrational. I think what she really means is you've got to be willing to be seen as irrational. For there is a perspective where rationality is both transcended AND included. And only from this height can the problems currently facing humanity be solved.

May 6, 2008, playlist for “Stumbling Upon Moksha” show on CKMS FM:

This show was inspired by what the young Scottish singer Amy MacDonald said about the importance of just being ourselves. As she explains, if we’re busy trying to be someone else, or trying to repress some part of ourselves in order to fit in, we might miss important opportunities to do what we love or to meet someone who's just perfect for us.

At only 20 years old, Amy’s voice is clearly that of an old soul, recalling another wise woman, Joni Mitchell. In her new 2007 classic "If" Joni reminds us all, that we have both the “fight” and the “insight” to be real, choose true, and give everything we've got! (http://jonimitchell.com/musician/song.cfm?id=If)).

This show is a celebration of the wisdom and courage to be-- as honestly and fully as possible. It's a dynamic balance of passion and dispassion, of having active intentions while letting go our our attachment to the outcome. In the end, it's about having a Big Heart and a Big Mind.

Amy Macdonald on stv.tv/music

I hope people outside the UK get introduced to Amy not only through just her music (which is great) but through the very "real" charm of her personality and heart. So inspiring.
